Mamelodi Sundowns managed to book their first 2015/16 Absa Premiership victory when they beat Bidvest Wits 4-2 at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday (Aug 22) afternoon.
A brace by Cuthbert Malajila and solitary strikes by Khama Billiat and Teko Modise were enough for Pitso Mosimane's men to bag the full three points, while a brace by Daine Klate gave the Students something to cheer about.
As early as the eighth minute, Teko Modise produced some flair as he got better of the ex-Brazilian Jabulani Shongwe with a 'shibobo', with the latter receiving a yellow card.
However, in the 17th minute, Sundowns skipper Ramahlwe Mphahlele showed leadership when he cleared the ball off Kennedy Mweene's line as he was beaten by Klate's header, but it was the hosts who grabbed the lead three minutes later through Malajila as he received a pass from Billiat and slotted home with ease, beating the oncoming Moeneeb Josephs.
In the 33rd minute, Hunt's men made efforts to retaliate when they received a free-kick on the edge of the box, however, Klate's attempt flew over the bar, not troubling Mweene. Both sides made attempts moving forward, but it was Sundowns who held on to 1-0 their lead towards the interval.
The Braamfontein side came back from the tunnel stronger as they managed to give Mweene something to work on, but the Zambian keeper parried Klate's shot over the bar and Buhle Mkhwanazi's shot hit the cross bar.
Just after the 50th minute mark, Botswana international Mogakolodi Ngele found space down the left and unleashed a thunderbolt which was tipped over by Josephs. Shongwe again showed his speed and awareness as he managed to take a shot which went over Mweene's posts.
In the 62nd minute, the hosts failed to deal with a cross from the right and found Klate in the box, who outjumped a defender and beat Mweene to find an equaliser.
As time was running out and both sides were seemingly settling for a draw, the Brazilians pushed forward searching for a second one and they were rewarded when Malajila tussled for the ball with Josephs in the box until he forced the goal as he was tackled to hand the hosts a 2-1 lead.
A few seconds later, Elias Pelembe's effort hit the posts, but it was the hosts who continued to show hunger when Billiat finished a beautiful through pass from Hlompho Kekana to make it 3-1. With just two minutes remaining on the board, midfield general Teko Modise made it four with a thunderous curling effort from the edge of the box, giving Josephs no chance.
The Clever Boys could not give up as they found their second one through Klate as they walked away with a loss. The win for 'Downs takes Mosimane's charges to position one on the log, while Wits occupy seventh with three points.
