ABSA Premiership: Pirates crush Chippa to pick up first league win

Orlando Pirates claimed their first domestic win of the 2015/16 season when they defeated 10-man Chippa United 4-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Buccaneers scored their goals through Ayanda Gcaba, Kermit Erasmus and Mpho Makola (who racked up a fantastic brace late on), while the Chilli Boys netted through Buyani Sali. All the goals arrived in the second half.

Pirates had the first shot in anger in the 10th minute when Kermit Erasmus fired at goal from the edge of the box, but Chippa goalkeeper Daylan Hawes was well-placed to punch the effort away from danger.

Five minutes later Bucs had the ball in the back of the net when Issa Sarr poked home from close range following Sifiso Myeni's run to the by-line and cutback, but the Senegal midfielder's celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.

The hosts continued to boss the game, but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Luvoyo Memela and Oupa Manyisa both had sights of goal in the latter stages of the first half, but neither was able to find the target with their shots from just outside the penalty area.

Early in the second half Pirates again hit the back of the net only to be denied by the offside flag – this time through Siyabonga Sangweni from a set piece – while Kermit Erasmus provided a peach of a cross from striker partner Thamsanqa Gabuza, whose glancing header missed the target in the 50th minute.

However, the Soweto club's frustrations were soon a thing of the past, with an unmarked Ayanda Gcaba scoring with a well-placed header from Myeni's corner kick in the 54th minute.

Chippa's hopes of coming back into the game were dealt a major blow in the 66th minute when midfielder Ugonna Uzochukwu picked up his second yellow card and was sent off – the Eastern Cape side also had a red card in their league opener against Kaizer Chiefs earlier in the month.

On 69 minutes Pirates doubled their lead, with Erasmus seeing his point-blank header well saved by Hawes, before forcing an own goal from a combination of the 'keeper and defender Nkosinathi Mthiyane. The Bucs forward was officially credited with the goal, but this will surely be amended in due course.

Despite being two goals and a man down, the Chilli Boys summoned up some fight and put together a strong passage of play. They were rewarded in the 75th minute when midfielder Buyani Sali scored with a low shot to halve the deficit.

Yet Chippa's efforts were in vain and there was to be no nervous finish for the hosts, as substitute Mpho Makola scored two beautiful goals – both from outside the box – in the 85th and 93rd minutes to put Pirates 4-1 up and secure their first league points of the season.
